XEmacs

Introduction

XEmacs is a graphical- and console-based text editor which runs on almost any Unix-like operating system as well as Microsoft Windows. XEmacs is a fork, developed based on a version of GNU Emacs from the late 1980s. Any user can download, use, and modify XEmacs as free software available under the GNU General Public License version 2 or any later version.

OS Invocation Version(s)
Red Hat Linux (32-bit) % /usr/bin/xemacs & 21.4.15 (default)

Notes

  1. Xemacs is deprecated. Prefer to run emacs instead.
  2. Exit xemacs with Ctrl-x, Ctrl-c.
  3. After building xemacs, remember to install its packages. The fastest way to install them is to download xemacs-all-packages.tar.gz and install it to:

    % /util/xemacs-x.y.z/lib/xemacs

    [cwmiller@lethe xemacs]$ pwd
    /util/xemacs-21.4.22/lib/xemacs
    [cwmiller@lethe xemacs]$ ls
    site-lisp site-modules xemacs-all-packages.tar xemacs-packages
