TSM Windows Client Install Instructions

Windows 2012R2/2016/2019 Server Instructions For Spectrum Protect (formerly TSM) Version 7.1.x

  1. Download the Spectrum Protect client and install scripts from https://www.buffalo.edu/content/www/ubit/information-for-it-staff/apps-a...
  2. It will ask for a directory to extract all the install files to. Leave this as is and click Next>. This will take a minute or so.
  3. After it is completed it will ask for a language. Make sure English (United States) appears and click OK.
  4. Click Next> to get started.
  5. Leave the install folder as is and click Next>.
  6. Select Typical installation and click Next>.
  7. Click Install to begin install. This will take a few minutes.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. Reboot Windows if requested.
  10. Start the Backup-Archive GUI from the start menu. It may generate an error that can be ignored because dsm.opt is not yet configured. If that error does occur, just click Yes
  11. Click Next>
  12. Select Create a new options file and click Next>
  13. Type in the nodename provided by the Backups support team (it is usually the fully qualified domain name (DNS name) and click Next>
  14. Select TCP/IP and click Next>
  15. For Server Address, type in the name of the TSM server provided by the Backups support team. Port depends on your TSM server:
    • 1500 for backups.buffalo.edu
    • 1500 for tsm.buffalo.edu
    • 1500 for tsm-a.buffalo.edu
    • 1600 for tsm3.buffalo.edu
    • 1700 for tsm4.buffalo.edu
    • 1800 for tsm-d.buffalo.edu
    Click Next>
  16. Click Clear All and Next (This is done twice.)>
  17. Click Next>
  18. Click Back up all local file systems (Leave other options as default) and Next>
  19. Click Finish
  20. Enter the ADSM password as supplied by the Backups support team.
  21. On the Menu bar go to Utilities -> Setup Wizard
  22. Select Help me configure the TSM Client Scheduler and click Next> twice
  23. Select Install a new or additional scheduler and click Next>
  24. Type in the name "TSM backup scheduler", select Local Machine and click Next>
  25. Leave the Option file name as is and click Next>
  26. For TSM node name type in the nodename provided by the Backups support team, for TSM password enter the password agreed on with the Backups support team, and click Next>
  27. Select The System account and Automatically when Windows boots and click Next>
  28. Leave the schedule log and error log file names as is and click Next>
  29. Select Yes to start the scheduler and click Next>
  30. Click Apply
  31. Click Finish and OK
  32. To install the logger go to https://download.acsu.buffalo.edu/soft/ub/Win9X/production/TSM/TSM_Logge...
  33. Click Continue-> and log on.
  34. Click on TSMLogger
  35. Download, and unzip
  36. Copy tsmlogger.ini, tsmlogger.vbs and dsm.opt to \Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\
  37. In tsmlogger.ini file, specify email recipient(s) (address(es)), to whom the report will be sent. Usually 'cse-it@buffalo.edu'. Also, set the SMTP server to: hobbes.cse.buffalo.edu,25
  38. Insert or edit, the following line in dsm.opt: Postschedulecmd '"C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\tsmlogger.vbs"', change the NODENAME, and change the TCPPORT # and TCPSERVERADDRESS if necessary.
  39. To ensure that the TSM client service reads the newly updated dsm.opt file, stop and restart the TSM Backup Scheduler service.
  40. At the command shell (prompt), type: tsmlogger . Or double click on: tsmlogger.vbs in \Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\ . In a short while, an email report should be sent to the specified addresses in tsmlogger.ini file.
