Shared Instrumentation Facilities

A Shared Instrumentation Facility (SIF) is a centralized, shared resource space that provides access to instruments, technologies, services, expert consultation, and other services to scientific investigators. The typical SIF is a discrete unit within an institution. It has dedicated personnel, equipment, and space for operations. In general, SIFs recover their cost of providing service in the form of user fees that are charged to an investigator’s funds.

In 2014, the School of Engineering and Applies Sciences (SEAS) and College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) began an initiative to develop institutional SIFs for the use of UB faculty, staff, and students.
