This page documents the OnGuard desktop client installation procedure.
You need these prerequisites to install and run the OnGuard desktop client.
- A Workstation running Microsoft Windows. The OnGuard client only runs on certain versions of Microsoft Windows:

Make sure the system is clean, secure, and patched with the latest updates and security fixes.
- Authorization from your department head naming you as a departmental OnGuard administrator.
- Download OnGuard Media. From CSE's secure OnGuard download directory, download OnGuard-7.4-dvd1.iso, Supp_Mat_Rev23_dvd2.iso. You need to be an Onguard admin authorized by your department head to download this media. If you're not an authorized OnGuard admin but think you should be, email us. If you're installing OnGuard from your own DVDs, make sure the version is OnGuard 7.4 Update 2 (Version 7.4.457.325).
- Burn DVDs. Burn the ISO files you downloaded above to DVDs. dvd1.iso produces the OnGuard Installation Disk. dvd2.iso produces the OnGuard Supplemental Materials Disk.
OR mount .iso files: If running Windows 10 you may also mount the .iso files directly to your computer.
- Turn off User Account Control (UAC): Control Panel --> Action Center --> Change User Account Control Settings and scroll bar down to the bottom (Never Notify).
- Install Prerequisite Applications. You first need to install prerequisite applications (which may already exist on your workstation). Insert the OnGuard Supplemental Materials DVD (Disk 2). If your workstation is not configured to AutoRun DVDs on insertion, run the runme.exe executable located on the disk to launch the main menu. If not already installed, clink the link to install:
- Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.1
You may need to reboot.
- Download Oracle Client. From CIT's secure Oracle Client download directory, download the Oracle 32-bit Client (not the Instant Client) that's most appropriate for your operating system. OnGuard will work with 11.2g 32-bit but only with Windows 7 and 8.x. We highly recommend Oracle 12.2c 32-bit (NOT 12.1c) for any Windows OS:
- Install Oracle Client.
- Run setup.exe.
- Set 'What type of installation do you want?' == Administrator
- Accept remaining installation default values.
- Configure Oracle Client.
- Run Oracle Net Configuration Assistant.
Start -> Oracle -> Configuration and Migration Tools -> Net Configuration Assistant
- Select Local Net Service Name configuration -> Next -> Add -> Next
- Set 'Service Name' = oraserve.sens.buffalo.edu -> Next
- Set 'Network Protocol' == TCP -> Next
- Set 'Hostname' = oraserve.sens.buffalo.edu
- Set 'Use the standard port number of 1521' -> Next
- Set 'Would you like to test the connection' == Yes -> Next. The test connection will FAIL with an "Invalid username/password" error. That error is expected.
- Set 'Net Service Name' = oraserve.sens.buffalo.edu
- Reboot.
- Configure DNS. Your workstation's DNS search path must include sens.buffalo.edu and MUST be listed first.
- Edit your Local Area Network Connections' TCP/IP properties:
Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Local Area Connection -> Properties -> TCP/IPv4 Properties -> Advanced -> DNS
-
Select "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)" and add sens.buffalo.edu to the top of the DNS search path.
- Install OnGuard.
- Insert the OnGuard Installation Disk (Disk 1) or copy the disk contents to your hard drive.
- Right click on setup.exe and choose 'Run as administrator'
- Hit the Install button. It will begin OnGuard required packages per your PC's configuration. Reboots may be required.
- Select 'Accept' radio button for the license agreement screen -> Next
- Select Client System button installation.
- Set System == Typical System
- Set database == Oracle Server (Manual) -> Next
- Set 'Select the computer which is the licensing host' -> Cancel (this dialogue box may appear behind the installation window).
- Set Provide the location of your license server == bestlock
- Set Port == 8189
- Set Provide the location of your database and provide the database login user == LENEL --> Next
- Hit the 'Install' button. Expect to wait for a long period of time. The amount of time depends on your system.
- The 'Setup Assistant' dialogue appears. This may take a few minutes to appear depending on the system. It actually gathers some information before it launches. 'Cancel' this box when it appears. You will run it manually at a later time.
- Reboot.
- Configure ODBC.
- Launch the Microsoft ODBC Administrator.
- Microsoft Windows 7, 8.x, and 10 64-bit:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe
- Under the "System DSN" tab, select the lenel ODBC entry.
- Click 'Configure...'
- Set TNS Service Name == oraserve.sens.buffalo.edu
- Set Data Source Name = lenel
- Set User ID = LENEL
- Set Description == [blank]
- Run Setup Assistant.
- Start --> OnGuard --> Setup Assistant
- Hit 'Start' button within Setup Assistant.
- Hit 'Apply Settings'
- It will auto complete the settings.
- Hit 'Close'.
- Test. Test the correctness of your installation, your ability to login, and your ability to administer all the access segments that you should be able to administer:
Start -> -> OnGuard 7.4-> System Administration -> [login]
- senshelp@buffalo.edu, enterprise-wide OnGuard administrator. Typically Scott Berner and Chris Majchrzak.
