How to Install the BASIS Desktop Client


This page documents the BASIS desktop client installation procedure.


You need these prerequisites to install and run the BASIS desktop client.

  1. A Workstation running Microsoft Windows. The BASIS client only runs on certain versions of Microsoft Windows:

    10, 32-bit Officially unsupported. CSE verified, unofficially, by experimentation, that the BASIS client works on this OS.
    8.1, 64-bit Officially unsupported. CSE verified, unofficially, by experimentation, that the BASIS client works on this OS.
    8.1, 32-bit Officially unsupported. CSE verified, unofficially, by experimentation, that the BASIS client works on this OS.
    8, 64-bit Officially supported.
    8, 32-bit Officially supported.
    7 (SP1), 64-bit Officially supported.
    7 (SP1), 32-bit Officially supported.

    Make sure the system is clean, secure, and patched with the latest updates and security fixes.

  2. Authorization from your department head naming you as a departmental BASIS administrator.

Installation Procedure

  1. Download BASIS Media. From CSE's secure BASIS download directory, download dvd1.iso, dvd2.iso. You need to be a BASIS admin authorized by your department head to download this media. If you're not an authorized BASIS admin but think you should be, email us. If you're installing BASIS from your own DVDs, make sure the version is BASIS ET693.
  2. Burn DVDs. Burn the ISO files you downloaded above to DVDs. dvd1.iso produces the BASIS Installation Disk. dvd2.iso produces the BASIS Supplemental Materials Disk.
  3. Install Prerequisite Applications. You first need to install prerequisite applications (which may already exist on your workstation). Insert the BASIS Supplemental Materials DVD (Disk 2). If your workstation is not configured to AutoRun DVDs on insertion, run the runme.exe executable located on the disk to launch the main menu. If not already installed, clink the links to install:
    • Microsoft .NET Framework
    • Microsoft XML Parser 6
    You may need to reboot more than once.
  4. Download Oracle Client. From CIT's secure Oracle Client download directory, download the Oracle Client (not the Instant Client) that's most appropriate for your operating system:

  5. Install Oracle Client.
    1. Run setup.exe.
    2. Set 'What type of installation do you want?' == Administrator
    3. Accept remaining installation default values.
  6. Configure Oracle Client.
    1. Run Oracle Net Configuration Assistant.
      1. 10g: The utility starts automatically.
      2. 11g R2: Run:
        Start -> All Programs -> Oracle -> Configuration and Migration Tools -> Net Configuration Assistant
    2. Select Local Net Service Name configuration -> Next -> Add -> Next
    3. Set 'Service Name' = -> Next
    4. Set 'Network Protocol' == TCP -> Next
    5. Set 'Hostname' =
    6. Set 'Use the standard port number of 1521' -> Next
    7. Set 'Would you like to test the connection' == Yes -> Next. The test connection will FAIL with an "Invalid username/password" error. That error is expected.
    8. Set 'Net Service Name' =
  7. Reboot.
  8. Configure DNS. Your workstation's DNS search path must include
    1. Edit your Local Area Network Connections's TCP/IP properties:
      Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Local Area Connection -> Properties -> TCP/IPv4 Properties -> Advanced -> DNS
    2. Select "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)" and add to the end of the DNS search path.
  9. Install BASIS.
    1. Insert the BASIS Installation Disk (Disk 1) or copy the disk contents to your hard drive.
    2. Run setup.exe
    3. Install MS Visual C++, MS SQL Server Native Client and/or any other software that is listed per your PC's configuration.
    4. Select Client System button installation.
    5. Set System == Typical System
    6. Set database == Oracle Server -> Next
    7. Set 'Select the computer which is the licensing host' -> Cancel (this dialogue box may appear behind the installation window).
    8. Set Provide the location of your license server == bestlock
    9. Set Port == 8189
    10. Set Provide the location of your database == LENEL
    11. The 'Security Utility Disclaimer Notice' dialogue appears. 'Agree' -> 'OK' -> 'Apply' -> 'OK' -> 'OK' -> 'Finish'
  10. Reboot.
  11. Apply ODBC Patch (older 32-bit OSes only). This step applies only to Microsoft Windows 7, 32-bit, Oracle 10g client installations. Skip this step for all other Microsoft Windows and Oracle 11g versions.

    Download and unzip this ODBC Patch.

    Ignore the fact that the zip file states it is for 10203 Oracle client. It is also needed for the 10201 client. These revised Installation Instructions are excerpted from the readme.txt file:

      Installation Instructions
         Once the self-extracting archive file has been exploded it 
         will create a directory structure as shown below on
         your hard drive.
         The directory structure after unzipping and where the files to be 
         copied are shown below. ORACLE_HOME should be replaced with the
         directory of your 10.2 Oracle Home. IE. c:\Oracle10.2.0\product :

  12. Configure ODBC.
    1. Launch the Microsoft ODBC Administrator. Run:
      1. Microsoft Windows 7, 8.x, and 10 64-bit:
      2. All other operating systems/architectures:
        Start -> All Programs -> Oracle -> Configuration and Migration Tools
    2. Under the "System DSN" tab, select the lenel ODBC entry.
    3. Click 'Configure...'
    4. Set TNS Service Name ==
    5. Set Data Source Name = lenel
    6. Set User ID = lenel
    7. Set Description == [blank]
  13. Test. Test the correctness of your installation, your ability to login, and your ability to administer all the access segments that you should be able to administer:
    Start -> All Programs -> B.A.S.I.S. ET693 -> System Administration -> [login]
